How to Cook: for Dummies

You are all grown up now. In college with your own apartment and absolutely no one to cook for you. You are probably regretting all those times you didn’t listen to your mother when she tried to teach you something about cooking. Why did you have to zone out and instead think of that cute girl from 5th period?! Well, now you are sorry and you are going to have to learn all this on your own. Here are some basic tips to help you on your cooking endeavors.

How to boil an egg
This is not a very hard task so if you are worried about this, I am worried about you. First, get out a pan that is big enough for the number of eggs you are cooking. Fill it with enough water to cover the eggs when you drop them in. Bring the water to a boil and then add the eggs. In order for them not to crack, drop them in with a spoon. Boil them for about 10 minutes. Then take them off the stove, and run cold water over them until there is no more hot water. Voila! Perfectly hard-boiled eggs. Chop the egg up and add mayo and mustard. It makes for a great egg salad sandwich.

How to cook pasta
Pasta is so easy to make. Take a big pot and add water. You want more water than pasta, but there is no specific amount because you will be draining it. If you want to bring out the flavor, add enough salt to the water to make it taste like the ocean. After the water starts boiling, add the pasta. You may need to stir the pasta from time to time. After about 8 or 10 minutes, take a piece out and test it. Keep doing that until the pasta is cooked to your liking. Strain the pasta and that’s it! If you don’t have any special sauces to put on the pasta, you can just add butter, spices and cheese and it’s really tasty!

How to cook rice
Rice can be kind of tricky so follow these steps closely. Decide on how much rice you want to make. The amount of water you use will be twice as much as the amount of rice. For one person, half a cup of rice is plenty (rice gets bigger when cooked). Put a cup of water in a pan and bring to boil. When it comes to boiling, add the rice and then turn down the heat all the way to low. Cover the pot. Do not stir the rice until the water has all been completely absorbed. If you did it right, your rice will not be crunchy but will be perfect! For really tasty rice, add a cube of chicken bouillon to every cup of water you use. Put the cube in halfway through cooking the rice.

How to cook chicken
Chicken is not as hard to cook as you would think. My favorite way is cooking it in a frying pan. If you’re chicken is frozen, leave it in the fridge for a few hours to thaw out. Add a little bit of butter to the bottom of a frying pan and a little bit of water. Set the heat to low and heat the pan up a bit without burning the butter. Place the chicken on the pan and turn the heat up to medium. When the chicken is white on one side, flip it over. When it is white all the way around, cut the chicken up. Make sure you cook the chicken all the way through so there is no pink. You can add any type of spice or sauce you want. Throw the chicken on top of the rice or pasta you made and you have a meal!
