One thing that comes with being a parent is doing all that you can to insure that your child thrives when it comes to their growth whether it’s mentally, emotionally or physically. And so, as it relates to their physical well-being, as your son or daughter is developing, it is imperative that you do all that you can to protect their vision.
If you want to do so but you’re not sure about the various things that can be done in order to be proactive about protecting their eyesight, you’ve come to just the right article. Below, we’re going to share a few ways that you can do just that.
Go to the doctor. There are so many health issues that can be avoided if we simply put forth the effort to see our doctors on a consistent basis. So, make sure that your child goes to their health care provider annually in order to get an eye exam. Also, it’s important that they have a dilated eye exam scheduled every other year. (Also keep in mind that if there is a history of visual impairment whether it’s with you or their other parent, you may need to do that once a year as well.)
Watch what they eat. Children definitely need to eat meals that consist of plenty of vitamins and nutrients. Foods that have been reportedly great for supporting visual development include leafy green vegetables, salmon, avocados, carrots, turkey, sweet potatoes and even dark chocolate.
Keep the lights on. When they are reading, playing video games or doing anything that requires them doing a lot of focusing, make sure that they don’t do it in dim lighting. That can cause them to strain to see which can damage their vision over time.
Don’t smoke around them. There are so many reasons why it’s not a good idea to smoke; the fact that it has the potential to damage your child’s eyes is only one of them. There is a significant amount of research supporting the fact that secondhand smoke can lead to cataracts, optic nerve damage and macular degeneration. This is why it’s so important to make sure to keep smoke away from your child’s presence.
Get them protective eyewear. Oftentimes, when we see young children with a pair of sunglasses on, we think that it’s purely for aesthetic reasons (because they really do tend to look cute with them on their faces). But the truth of the matter is that protective eyewear is another measure that should be taken, not only in order to keep the damaging sun rays out of their eyes but also so they won’t run the risk of getting an eye injury; especially if they are helping you to do lawn work or they’re playing a sport. Whether it’s sunglasses, goggles or eye shields and whether you get them at your local Wal-Mart or one of theĀ eyewear suppliers from International Eyewear, invest a few dollars and get them some protective eyewear. When it comes to protecting your child’s vision development, it’s a worthwhile investment.
