There are many reasons for wanting to know where you came from. You may want to know where your family originated, as in what country they came from, you may want to know how your family came to reside in the area in which you were born, or any other reason you have for wanting to know your ancestral roots. Researching your family genealogy is very fun. First of all, you might get to meet family members you never knew you even had. Best of all, however, you may be able to find some missing money that has gone unclaimed because nobody could find a next of kin. Of course, this is rare, but it’s one of the perks of doing a free genealogy search.
Where Did I Come From?
Family genealogy research typically comes from that question: Who where my ancestors and where did they come from? Beginning your family genealogy search can seem daunting at first. After all, how do you even get started? You’ll be happy to know, however, that there are many ways to go about doing a family geneology search and some of them can be done in the privacy of your own home. If you want to go deep, however, and you really want to research back to your great, great, great grandmother, grandfather and beyond, you’re going to have to do a little dirty work. You’ll have a blast doing it, however, and finding out where you came from can be very rewarding.
Ask Your Family
The best way to go about doing a family genealogy search is to ask your family where on Earth you came from. They may have old photo albums, diaries, newspaper clippings and more that you can sift through. Especially ask those really old family members if they have any tidbits locked away in their attics or basements that you can go through. These types of searches are perfect for uncovering those little bits of treasure that can take you further into your family genealogy search. When that’s exhausted, you can then go online, where there are many family genealogy websites available, or you can use one of the many genealogy books to take you even further.
It’s when you uncover that history further and further that family genealogy research becomes very rewarding. Just finding out that you’re from a country you didn’t know about, or finding out that you have long lost family somewhere that you’ve never met, or, yes, that you have money waiting for you somewhere, is the most exciting time of all when it comes to genealogy research.
As very little was known about my grandparents history – off i went on my genealogy journey and have uncovered many secrets and unknowns that were simply not told to any of us. No doubt, as they were both used for forced labour in Germany during WW2, this affected them in a way as stories were not told full stop – this also seemed to have boiled over to their life prior to WW2 and very little was mentioned.
So i had a lot to find – and have come a long way in the last year and a bit.
Maternal grandparents is the reason i started.
