Keeping your baby safe from the sun is essential all year round, but especially during the warm summer months. Your baby’s skin is ultra sensitive so you need to take extra steps to protect it.
Here are some ways that you can keep baby skin safe and protected from the sun’s dangerous rays:
- If at all possible avoid the sun when the rays are the strongest and the most dangerous. This is between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
- If you need to be out in the sun try to stay in the shade with your baby. Dress your baby in lightweight, but protective clothing, such as long pants and a long sleeved shirt or at least bring a blanket with you to cover the baby’s extremities.
- Always put a hat on your baby. A hat with a wide brim is best or the type with a flap that covers the back of your baby’s neck.
- Clothing that is tightly woven is best for your baby when out in the sun.
- Purchase a pair of infant sunglasses with UV protection and get your baby used to them at an early age, if possible.
- If your baby is older than 6 months old, apply sunscreen formulated for infants. Sunscreen is not recommended for infants under the age of 6 months.
- Consider purchasing sun protective clothing. The Alex & Me Company sells a wide variety of children’s clothing made especially for your child at http://www.alexandme.com/Children_UV_Clothing_s/14.htm.
Enjoy your summer with your little one, but be sure that he or she is well protected against potential skin damage.
