Even though the fall colors are gorgeous and this happens to be my favorite season there is one thing that I am dreading and that is picking up the leaves. Do not get me wrong, I love to rake and be amongst the leaves. I do not mind the hard work that is involved in raking and bagging, but there are just too many leaves for me to take care of.
Last year I counted thirty bags of leaves. My back ached and I thought that I was going to drop. That was nothing though. That was before I took a couple of my trees down. There used to be 100 bags each year for the longest time! It was a nightmare.
I could not afford the expense of hiring someone so it was up to my son and I. How much can you ask an eleven year old to do, really? A great help, but he was a child. Raking the leaves to the curb would have been easy, but in our neighborhood we were required to bag them.
I tried a different method every year hoping that I would find “the solution”. I did find a couple of reasonably easy methods though. My top two favorites were to lay down a tarp, rake the leaves on to the tarp and take them to the leaf dump down the street. My other favorite was to get a flexible sheet of plastic that fit inside a leaf bag. I would rake the leaves and use this piece of plastic to hold the bag open. It went relatively smoothly.
It is coming quickly so you will need to plan your method of attack for this year’s leaf pick up. For me, I will use the tired, but true method of the latter that I described above. There really is no easy way. You just have to dig right in and start raking.
