For a first time Mom there is lots to learn, and most certainly lots to look forward to. Having the opportunity to breastfeed your infant is one of the most rewarding aspects of giving birth. Then when you discover that you are going to be giving birth to twins, you may be a little apprehensive as to how you are ever going to be able to breastfeed two infants. There is no need to panic, as there should be plenty of milk to go around, and you will quickly adapt to a variety of techniques that will allow you to feed both of your infants at the same time. Here are a few tips to help you prepare for your breastfeeding of your soon to arrive twins.
The proper clothing
It is always important when you are breastfeeding that you have clothing designed for this purpose, but it is even more so when you are going to be feeding twins. You will have two babies that don’t want to be waiting for you to have to fumble with clothing. Also with the proper clothing, you can easily breastfeed your babies no matter where you may be.
Lots of pillows
When you are first adapting to feeding two babies at the same time you want to be sure that you have an area that is comfortable and where you can have lots of pillows. You can also purchase items that will assist you with your duel feeding like a nursing pillow. You may also find that if you use a stool under your feet to raise your knees a little it may help as well.
Practice different holding patterns
Every breastfeeding mom of twins soon develops their own style for holding their babies during feedings. For the first while it may seem a little awkward for you, but you will be pleased to see how quickly you adapt and find your own innovative ways of holding the little ones.
Feeding one at a time
There is no rule that says you have to feed both babies at the same time, but you will find that if you don’t, it is going to place a great demand on your time. It is particularly hard during the night feedings to have to feed each baby on their own. However, there will be times that one baby may not want to eat at the same time as the other. You will also want to have individual feeding times on occasion to nurture each baby on their own.
In any event the key is not to think that just because you are having twins that you won’t be able to have the pleasure of breastfeeding. This is not one of the joys of being a new Mom that you will have to miss out on.
