Inexpensive Family Vacations – How to Save Money on Family Vacations

Family standing by car loaded with cases, smiling, portraitWe all need a vacation sometimes, but family vacations and outings can be incredibly expensive.  Some families spend several thousand dollars on a single vacation, and that’s not really an expense most of us can afford these days.

But you don’t have to take away your family’s vacation for the sake of saving money!  If you’re careful, you can take a great vacation with your family at a price anyone can afford.

First, you should think about visiting destinations that most other families don’t.  Instead of heading for Orlando, or the Grand Canyon, or Hawaii, visit one of the smaller destinations.  Many cities on the coast of Florida or Alabama make great vacation spots, but the prices of hotels, food, and entertainment is less than half that of more popular vacation spots.

If you have airline miles, don’t forget to use them.  Airline miles can make a huge difference.  Even if you only get one or two of your family’s plane tickets for free, it will make a big difference in how much you spend overall.

If you can, try to travel during the off-season.  If you travel in the peak seasons around spring break or in the summer, your hotel bill will be two or three times higher.  By traveling when there are fewer tourists, you can save a lot of cash.

Also, check the popular travel related websites like Expedia and Hotels.com.  Sometimes you can get great package deals or discounts on hotels that will save you a lot.

While you’re there, be sure to ask the locals for recommendations for entertainment and restaurants.  The tourist traps will charge a lot more for inferior food and service, but the locals will know where to get a great deal.
