Clothes to Keep Warm: Dressing Your Children During Winter Months

Going outside to play is something many children look forward to regardless if it is summer or winter outside. However, as children, they often don’t understand the importance of dressing appropriately when they go outside to play. This really isn’t generally that much of an issue during the summer, but it definitely is during the winter.

Just because it’s cold outside doesn’t mean that children shouldn’t be able go outside and play. It just means that they need to pay attention to how they dress. As parents, it’s our job to make sure we teach them everything they need to know in this area. There will undoubtedly be a time when our children go outside to play in the winter and we aren’t there to make sure they’re dressed right, so teach them this now. Below are the essentials to dressing right for winter play.

Clothes to Keep Warm: Shirts, Pants and Socks:

During the winter months it can get below zero degrees outside, in some parts of the country. Therefore, it’s important that your children understand that they will need more than one shirt on before they leave the house. It’s best for your children to dress in layers during these months. It’s a good idea for your children to wear at least 2 thin shirts under a thick sweater or sweatshirt. For pants, dressing your children in thermal underwear and then jeans or sweats on top will keep them warm while outside. Also, don’t forget to layer socks as well. Generally two to three layers of socks is plenty, depending on the shoes being worn.

Shoes:

During the winter, your children should be wearing warm shoes that are water resistant. If you live in the far North then most likely you send your children outside in warm snow boots. There are a lot of things to consider when looking for a good pair of snow boots. For instance, you want to make sure they are lined on the inside so that they are warm, they need to come up past your ankle – almost to your shin, should have good tread, rubber soles and have a way to keep the water from seeping in from the top. The most important thing about winter footwear is that you give your children something that keeps their feet nice and toasty.

Hats, Gloves and Scarves:

When the winter months are in full swing, it’s not just the snow and ice that needs to be taken into consideration, but the wind chill as well. This is why it is necessary that your children don’t leave the house without having a warm hat on to cover their ears and lock in the heat around their head, gloves to keep their hands and fingers warm and a scarf to keep their neck warm.

Winter Coat:

Finally, it’s important that you send your children outside wearing a good winter coat. A good winter coat is one that is heavy and consists of a warm lining. It should also have a hood on it in case it begins to rain, snow, sleet or hail.
